What is a Tiny Forest®?

A Tiny Forest is a dense, fast-growing native woodland that is around the size of a tennis court. The forest is not only an attractive location for butterflies, birds, bees and small mammals; it is also a nice and appealing place for people. In this outdoor classroom, children can learn about nature. Also, it serves as a pleasant and healthy meeting place for the local community.

Why does IVN plant Tiny Forests?

IVN’s mission is to build a better world where people and nature come together and are connected. This mission is very much visible in the Tiny Forest project. We consider these little forests to be the first step towards creating a natural living and learning environment for people of all ages. Through planting Tiny Forests, we aim to:

  • restore nature in urban areas and;tiny forest

  • create a healthy environment where people are/feel connected with nature

The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. About 66% of the population lives in an urban area, far away from nature. How can we expect people - and especially children - who never visit nature, to care about nature, loss of biodiversity, climate change and plastic soup?

We believe that kids who plant their own forest, learn how to maintain it, and follow nature lessons in the outdoor classroom, will grow up loving nature and will help to restore our planet to it’s former glory. That is why we involve schoolchildren and the local community in every step of the process. Because the children of today might the the last generation who can take effective action.

Growing healthy and resilient communities

Tiny Forest is not just about restoring nature: it is about creating a healthy environment, where people can (re)connect to nature. With Tiny Forests, we want to create a natural habitat for people in the city. Research shows that children who spent a lot of time in nature, grow up to be healthy, happy and creative adults, that want to contribute to society.

We plant Tiny Forests in urban areas in the Netherlands. This means they bring all the benefits of a forest – climate cooling, lower flood risks, biodiversity, improved air quality, and physical and mental wellbeing – right into the heart of our cities and urban spaces.

Tiny Forest®: tackling the climate crisis and loss of biodiversity, one Tiny Forest at a time.
